The Veterinary Technology Program prepares students for a career as a veterinary technician.

Large Animal Medicine: Lab

This requires 2 credit hours and 150 contact hours.

Expected competencies upon completion include:

• Handling restraint and techniques associated with horses, cattle, sheep, goats, and swine
• Correct pronunciation and spelling of medical terms
• Understanding of the normal anatomy and physiology of common large animal species
• Assisting with surgical and common treatment procedures
• Correct monitoring of anesthesia
• Review large animal radiology, parasitology, hematology, fluid therapy, and clinical pathology
• Proficiency with common large animal techniques

Regulatory Veterinary Medicine

This requires 3 credit hours and 45 contact hours.

Expected competencies upon completion include:

• Knowledge of where meat comes from
• Meat inspection in the United States
• The potential role of a veterinary technician in meat inspection
• Importance of food safety
• Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point System
• Criteria for an animal to be passed vs. condemned

Issues in Veterinary Technology

This requires 3 credit hours and 45 contact hours.

• Broader knowledge in specialized areas of veterinary technology

Veterinary Tech Practicum II

This requires 4 credit hours and 52 contact hours.

Expected competencies upon completion include:

• Achieve a grade of at least 75% on both written and practical exams during coursework
• Have the ability to coordinate several lab activities simultaneously
• Accurately and proficiently perform basic clinical lab testing procedures
• Professionalism in attitude, language, and dress

Veterinary Tech Practicum III

This requires 2 credit hours and 30 contact hours.

Expected competencies upon completion include:

• Assisting in routine health procedures, surgery, etc.
• Preparing, administering, and monitoring anesthesia
• Preparing animals, instrumentation, equipment, etc.
• Performing daily treatments, observations, and diagnostic tests
• Recordkeeping
• Refilling supplies
• Admitting and discharging patients

VT Practicum IV

This requires 1 credit hour and 15 contact hours.

Expected competencies upon completion include:

• Safe use and maintenance of radiology equipment
• Sample collection
• Restraint of exotics
• Pharmacy prescriptions as prescribed by a veterinarian
• Veterinary rounds

Upon successful completion, graduates may sit for the national assessment through the American Association of Veterinary State Boards to obtain their license and work as licensed veterinary technicians (LVTs).

The Veterinary Technician Program is an Associate of Applied Science Degree Program designed to teach students the knowledge and skills to work in various veterinary clinical settings.

• Surgical assistance for a variety of domestic animals

It also requires a 3-month long externship experience to give students the opportunity to work alongside other veterinary healthcare professionals.

The program duration is 96 weeks.

Upon successful completion, graduates will be eligible to take the Veterinary Technology National Exam (VTNE) and can become Registered Veterinary Technicians if they pass.
